In-Ear (IEM)

In-ear monitors (IEMs) or in-ears are a special category of headphones used commonly by musicians, audio engineers and audiophiles to listen to music or to hear a personal mix of vocals and stage instrumentation for live performance or recording studio mixing. While traditional headphones deliver sound through earcups on the outer ear, “in-ears” deliver sound through tiny earpieces that fit into the ear canal. Because these earpieces slide into the ear, they create a barrier to any outside noise – offering up to 20-40dB of noise reduction. At the same time, they allow live performers a customized mix with only the instruments they want to hear. In-ears, then, are half-headphone and half-earplug; they offer both isolation and a crystal-clear listening experience, in even the noisiest live stage settings.

Amplifiers & DAC

An amplifier or (informally) amp is an electronic device that can increase the power of a signal. It functions by taking power from the battery and controlling the output to match the input signal shape but with a larger amplitude. In this sense, an amplifier modulates the output of the power supply based upon the properties of the input signal. The amplifier provides gain to boost the audio signal in the listener’s headphones.

In addition to being capable of powering high-quality headphones, most portable headphone amplifiers also double as digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Every DAC has a dedicated audio processor that can make your music sound noticeably better when paired with a quality pair of headphones.

DAP/Player

Digital Audio Player (DAP) is a portable electronics device capable of storing and playing digital media audio files. The data is typically stored on flash memory or internal hard drive. Most portable media players are equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which users can plug headphones into, or connect to a HiFi system. Often mobile digital audio players are marketed and sold as “portable MP3 players”, even if they also support other file formats and media types.
